Veterinary Surgery
Surgical Services for Dogs & Cats
At Omemee Veterinary Hospital, we offer a wide range of surgical services, from routine procedures to more advanced operations, all designed to support your cat or dog's health, happiness, and long-term mobility.
We understand that the idea of surgery can be stressful for pet owners, but please know that our veterinary team takes every precaution to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable throughout the process.
When a procedure requires specialized equipment or advanced expertise, we may refer your companion to a board-certified veterinary surgeon to ensure the best possible outcome.
Surgical Procedures
At our veterinary hospital in Omemee, we provide both medical and emergency surgical procedures to treat illnesses, manage health conditions, or address injuries caused by accidents or trauma.
Depending on your four-legged friend's needs, our veterinarians may perform or refer a range of elective and non-elective surgeries, including:
-
Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgery covers a range of ear, nose, and throat procedures, mass removals, and treatment of flesh wounds. Almost all surgical procedures not covered under the heading of orthopedic surgery may be considered soft tissue surgery.
Soft tissue surgery can also include procedures for hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and skin disorders.
-
Spaying & Neutering
Spaying and neutering are very common surgical procedures performed to sterilize pets, prevent disease, and extend the life expectancy of dogs and cats.
-
C-Sections
Cesarean sections are performed to surgically remove puppies or kittens from their mother's uterus. C-sections are typically performed when the mother is unable to give birth naturally.
-
Ocular Surgery
Ocular surgery is performed to treat eye conditions in dogs and cats.
Common ocular surgeries include eyelid tumour removal, cataract surgery, ectropion surgery, entropion surgery, exenteration of the orbit and cherry eye surgery.
-
Mass Removal
Masses can grow on or under the skin, or inside a body cavity. While some masses may be removed for aesthetic purposes, others can be serious or even life-threatening.
-
Foreign Body Removal
Our pets sometimes ingest foreign objects that become stuck inside their bodies. If your dog or cat has eaten an object it shouldn't have, we can perform foreign body surgery to remove it.
Foreign body surgery can also be necessary if your pet has been in an accident and needs something removed. If that's the case, we can help.
-
Wound Repair
Wounds occur when living tissue has been cut, broken, burnt, torn, or otherwise damaged. It's imperative that these wounds be cleaned, disinfected, and appropriately cared for by a qualified veterinarian as soon as possible to avoid infection and ensure they heal properly.
-
Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgeries correct injuries and conditions of the bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, and other skeletal structures in your pet.
At Omemee Veterinary Hospital, our veterinarians do not perform orthopedic surgeries in-clinic. Pets requiring procedures for fractures, joint conditions, or other orthopedic concerns are referred to a qualified veterinarian or specialty referral hospital.
This ensures your pet receives the highest standard of care with the appropriate expertise and surgical support.
Our team will guide you through the referral process and coordinate with the surgical team, while continuing to provide follow-up care at our clinic to support your pet’s recovery.
- 'Pinning' stabilizes the fracture by inserting a long stainless steel rod into the middle of the bone across the fractured area.
- 'Plating' involves attaching a flat stainless steel plate to the bone using screws on either side of the fracture.
- 'External fixation' stabilizes fractures using a series of pins on the outside of the leg that pass through the skin and into the bone on either side of the fracture.
Other orthopedic surgeries performed are related to hip dysplasia and disc disease. Please contact us if you have any questions about these procedures or if you think your cat or dog might benefit from them.
-
Dental Surgery
Our veterinarians provide dental surgeries to relieve pain and restore good oral health to dogs and cats. These surgeries can range from tooth extractions to gum disease treatment and jaw fracture repairs.
The Surgery Process
Prior to any surgical procedure, our veterinarians always conduct a comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation, which includes a physical exam and diagnostic tests to assess your cat or dog's overall health and identify any potential risks related to anesthesia.
During the procedure, a dedicated veterinary nurse will carefully administer anesthesia and continuously monitor your pet’s vital signs to ensure their safety and comfort throughout.
After surgery, we focus on attentive post-operative care and effective pain management. When it’s time for your pet to go home, your veterinarian will give you clear, detailed instructions to support a smooth recovery.
Sterilization Protocols
Our clinic follows strict surgical protocols, including the use of dedicated surgical suites. All staff wear sterile attire while in the operating area, and every surgical instrument and piece of equipment is thoroughly cleaned, sterilized, and properly prepared before each procedure.
