Veterinary Lab & Diagnostics
Diagnostic Technology
At Omemee Veterinary Hospital, our in-house laboratory and diagnostic tools enable us to quickly and accurately identify the root cause of your pet's symptoms.
Our reference laboratory provides accurate and timely results with the support of its veterinary consult team.
With digital radiography (X-rays), we capture clear, detailed images of your pet’s internal structures and dental health. In addition, our ultrasound technology provides real-time insight into the function and condition of their internal organs.
Our Diagnostic Services
At Omemee Veterinary Hospital, our in-house laboratory is equipped with the following technology to help us diagnose your pet's condition in a timely manner so we can create an appropriate treatment plan:
- Radiography (Digital X-rays)
Radiography is a safe, painless, and non-invasive diagnostic tool. It uses such a low level of radiation that it’s even suitable for pregnant pets and young animals.
X-rays help us examine bones and internal organs, allowing us to detect and diagnose a variety of conditions such as fractures, arthritis, bladder stones, spinal issues, and certain types of tumors.
- Digital Dental X-rays
If your cat or dog is suffering from severe dental issues, such as periodontal disease, much of this damage occurs below the gum line where it can't be easily seen. Digital X-rays allow our team to examine the roots, bones, and internal anatomy of your cat or dog's teeth.
With digital X-rays, the risk of radiation exposure for your pet is significantly lower than with traditional X-ray technology. This allows us to have a safe way to see below the surface of your pet's gum line to fully evaluate each tooth.
- Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of your pet’s internal structures. Because the images are captured in real time, we can observe not only the shape and position of internal organs but also their movement and blood flow through the vessels. All Ultrasound Appointments would be conducted by a referring DVM, performed at our Hospital.
- ECG
If your veterinarian performs a physical examination and suspects your pet may have a heart disorder, we usually take chest X-rays and perform an electrocardiogram (ECG).
An electrocardiogram measures the electrical activity of a heart using electrodes attached to the skin with sticky plastic patches. The data collected during this test can show how a heart is functioning and detect any irregularities. This procedure can be completed easily and quickly.
- Bloodwork
At our veterinary lab in Omemee, we perform a variety of routine and specialized blood tests to assess your pet’s overall health and help diagnose medical conditions.
Common tests we run include a complete blood count (CBC), white blood cell count, hemoglobin and MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration), hematocrit, platelet levels, eosinophils, and a full blood serum profile.
- Urinalysis
Urinalysis is a key diagnostic test that provides your veterinarian with essential insights into the physical and chemical properties of your pet's urine. These insights allow your veterinarian to assess the health of your pet's kidneys, urinary system, and other organs.
Urinalysis is also important when it comes to diagnosing metabolic diseases, such as diabetes.
- Fecal Exams
A fecal exam helps us detect gastrointestinal infections that may be affecting your pet’s health—and potentially your family’s as well. This test allows your veterinarian to check for intestinal parasites like roundworms or hookworms, so we can provide the right treatment if needed.
