Spaying & Neutering
Keeping the Cat & Dog Population Healthy & Protected
Neutering is a surgical procedure that involves removing the testicles of male pets, while spaying involves removing the reproductive organs of female pets. These procedures prevent male pets from fathering litters and female pets from becoming pregnant.
Spaying or neutering your cat or dog not only helps prevent unplanned litters but also offers health benefits and can improve behaviour. These surgeries can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer and may help curb undesirable behaviours.
Our veterinarians strongly recommend spaying or neutering all pets, as it supports long-term health and well-being while also helping to reduce the number of homeless animals in shelters.
Although all procedures involving general anesthesia carry some level of risk, spaying and neutering are widely considered safe for most dogs and cats.

When to Spay or Neuter Your Cat or Dog
No one understands your furry friend's health better than your veterinarian. Below, we provide general spay and neuter age guidelines. However, it may be different for your pet. Always consult your veterinarian.
Cats: We suggest spaying or neutering cats around six months of age. By this time, they've typically reached a suitable size and can safely process anesthesia. While earlier procedures are ideal, healthy adult cats can still be safely spayed or neutered at any age.
Dogs: We generally recommend spaying or neutering puppies at around six months of age. However, for certain breeds, some veterinarians advise waiting until the dog has reached sexual maturity before undergoing the procedure. Your veterinarian can help you decide the most appropriate timing based on your dog’s breed, age, and overall health.
FAQs About Spaying & Neutering
Are you considering having your pet spayed or neutered, but still have questions? To learn more about spaying and neutering read through the answers to our most frequently asked questions below:
-
How long will it take for my pet to recover from surgery?
Spay and neuter procedures are typically day surgeries, allowing pets to return home in the evening following their procedure.
After surgery, your cat or dog’s activity should be restricted for about 10 days to allow proper healing. To protect the incision site, our first recommendation is a recovery suit or post-surgery shirt. E-collars are also available if needed to help prevent licking or scratching.
Your veterinarian may request that you bring your pet in for a follow-up appointment.
-
Will my pet feel anything during the procedure?
No, your pet will be under general anesthesia and will be asleep for the entire procedure. When they wake up, they may be a little tender at the surgery site, but other than that, they should not feel anything.
-
Will my pet gain weight after the procedure?
Your puppy or kitten will continue to grow to their full adult weight after the spay or neuter procedure, and this naturally includes some weight gain.
However, your pet will not gain weight as a result of being spayed or neutered.
-
How much will it cost to get my pet fixed?
